From the creative minds behind the legendary action role playing games Demon's Souls, Dark Souls & Dark Souls II, FromSoftware, bring the brutal new, PS4 Exclusive, Bloodborne.

Venture into the dark, ancient city of Yharnam and unlock answers behind the strange endemic illness spreading though the streets. You are a hunter and therefore must seek out the largest foes and beasts in this terrifying world, where danger lurks around every corner!

Directed by Souls series veteran, Hidetaka Miyazaki the game features similar action role playing elements that fans of the previous Souls games are familiar with; however these have been tweeted to accommodate a more aggressive, offensive play style than that of the slower paced, more defensive older games. This new risk v reward approach to combat is emphasized through a new health regain system, which allows the player to recover lost amounts of health by striking back at enemies within a small window of time.

Melee weapons can now be transformed into three different types, giving the player more option in combat and the option to string combo moves together. Firearms are also introduced into the game, acting more as a way to stun an enemy or groups of enemies and follow up with a critical attack from a melee weapon. It's all about being on the front foot and not sitting back, which delivers faster paced gameplay than ever before.

The game has been in development since the completion of the critically acclaimed Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition on last gen consoles, with this being the first developed for the new, much more powerful PS4 console, another team worked on the equally successful game Dark Souls II during this time.

Miyazaki wanted the games setting to be similar to a Gothic, Victorian England which was only possible on the new hardware. Because of this setting it allowed the game to feature firearms for the first time, all though at the loss of more traditional armour and shields found in previous Souls games. However the choice to empower the player with more offensive options and greater agility counters these changes.

The difficulty of the Souls games has always been infamous, and something that has, in the past put off more casual gamers. From Software wanted to make Bloodborne more appealing to the causal gamer whilst still pleasing the fans of the earlier games.

Even though there are many similarities between Bloodborne and From Software's Soul's series', Bloodborne is not connected to those games in any way and features entirely new lore from those titles. In terms of story, the game still has the same vague, mysterious nature of storytelling that the developers have become known for, but does introduce more traditional story elements, again with the hope to appeal to a wider audience.

The game was originally leaked as project Beast with its official announcement as Bloodborne at Sony's 2014 E3 media briefing. The game was released worldwide in March 2015.

The game has received critical acclaim within the gaming media, with the game not scoring below 9 on any of the main sites and publications with a current score of 93/100 on Metacritic .

Review round up

Here are some of the top reviews from the gaming media with some quotes taken directly from there reviews.

Gamespot : 9/10

I finished Bloodborne in less time than I did Dark Souls II, yet I treasure it more in spite of its few missteps. In death there is life, and in blood, there is redemption. More hyperbole, yes, but for a game this theatrical, only hyperbole will do.

Game Informer : 9.75/10

While this new IP doesn't stray far from the established Souls franchise, it is a magical, wondrous work that admirably instills both terror and triumph in those brave enough to delve into it.

The Jimquisition : 10/10

Bloodborne is as glorious as it is grotesque, a harsh and unyielding exercise in getting battered mercilessly while feeling encouraged the whole painful way.

Digital Spy : 5/5

I want to keep playing, I want to discover its secrets, I want to fight every monster, try every weapon, discuss theories and explore as many of the community dungeons as possible. To put it bluntly, I want to bleed the game dry.
