Valkyria Chronicles is a hybrid of RPG and real time strategy (with many elements in between) but since it's been out for pretty much half a decade, that should be common knowledge to all -even if you've never played the game. And it is indeed a smexy game.
Set in an era reminiscent of WWII during Hitler's rise, the game takes a creative spin on it's story. But of course the difference is that it's filled with magical things and wacky Japanese game physics that govern the world. All of this comes together in a story involving war and friendship and it works very well. It's safe to say it touched me and I loved it.
What makes the story great is the characters. I guarantee almost every single one will have an impact on you throughout the game. Eventually you won't be able to stand completing the mission if one dies, so you redo it over. They all effect gameplay quite a bit and have unique traits. But of course it's the main characters that really shine through.
Gameplay is addictive. The main menu revolves around turning pages in a book to select all your missions and options, including cutscenes etc. Everything is in the book interface. It works and it's easy. Once you get into the combat you'll sink hours. Mainly because you end up being a strategist and secondly because most missions will take at least a quarter hour. It's deep though so you'll love it.
Valkyria Chronicles ticks all the boxes for a RPG gamer waiting for something to hit them this generation and this happened 5 years ago. It's smexy, it's emotional, and it's scale is grand. You feel like you're part of something and all the technical drawbacks and rare bugs will not even scratch off at your enjoyment of this game in the slightest.
