Suburbia Board Game Product Description

Plan, build, and develop a small town into a major metropolis. Use hex-shaped building tiles to add residential, commercial, civic, and industrial areas, as well as special points of interest that provide benefits and take advantage of the resources of nearby towns. Your goal is to have your borough thrive and end up with a greater population than any of your opponents.

Suburbia is a tile-laying game in which each player tries to build up an economic engine and infrastructure that will be initially self-sufficient, and eventually become both profitable and encourage population growth. As your town grows, you'll modify both your income and your reputation. As your income increases, you'll have more cash on hand to purchase better and more valuable buildings, such as an international airport or a high rise office building. As your reputation increases, you'll gain more and more population (and the winner at the end of the game is the player with the largest population).

During each game, players compete for several unique goals that offer an additional population boost – and the buildings available in each game vary, so you'll never play the same game twice!

I have long been a fan of city building games and economy games are where I live so this should have pretty much walked up to me on its release, slapped me hard in the face three times, told me to hand over my wallet and then walk to a nearby table saying I am well! What are you waiting for? Once I did take the plunge, I found a very rewarding experience indeed. While the components may not seem very thematic, what each tile does and how it interacts with the other tiles in your suburb is thematic. The way you draw people in and drive them away is thematic and suburbs competing for the best buildings and for new residents drips with theme. Everything from the balancing act with your finances to the way a slaughterhouse drives residents away but encourages restaurants is thematic so if I have to made it clear. This game does have theme! While the game seems simple in terms of the rules, it comes to life when deciding what buildings to buy and more so, where to place them. Keeping track of what building interact with what and finding the optimum place to locate your next tile is where the hard work really comes in. Driving up your economy when in the first rounds you have next to no money and bearing in mind that you need to increase your reputation and get people into your suburb and keeping in mind the public and hidden goals and keeping track of your opponents suburbs! It all mounts up, doesn't it? I have heard the penalties for moving up the points/population track called a catch up mechanism but I disagree. I feel it's more a way to keep the leader thinking and working hard. Yes it will slow them down but you don't just get handed the population to get closer to them, you need to play well and even then you will face the same hurdles as they did. It's a nice feature and just adds to the game for me. There is just enough random in the game for me with the tile draw and the secret goals but I don;t think it's a game breaker. Good effective play will put you in with a good chance of winning regardless. Suburbia is a game I have yet to win at and I am ok with that. I can see what others have done to beat me, they deserved it and I'll learn from it. That is key in a good game for me. It doesn't mean I am not proud of what I've constructed usually though and when we have the after game chat everyone can easily analyse what each other was doing. Again, a good sign for me. This is a clever, thought provoking, replayable game that is easy to learn and easy to get into. From the buying of tiles to the placing of them and all that surrounds those actions there is so much going on. Interaction between players ranges from the subtle to the downright blatant. I like this game, I like it a lot.
