Everything We Know About Cyberpunk 2077 So Far

Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced back in May 2012 by CD Projekt Red at their Summer Conference. Back then the game was referred to as just “Cyberpunk” and was planned to be the new adaptation of the tabletop game, Cyberpunk 2020 made originally by Mike Pondsmith’s in 1988.

There have been sequels and expansions that have been released under the Cyberpunk umbrella as well as novels and two collectable card games. All of these will provide CD Projekt Red with a huge amount of content to build an amazing gaming universe we’re all praying for that will compete with the likes of Deus Ex, The Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

For a while, we didn’t hear anything on the game but in January 2013, everyone began to see a few teasers. First was an image of a Night City police officers badge and then the next day came a very brief trailer allowing you to still get a feel of what was to come. Missed that one? Watch it here…

Other than this and a few other bits of information, CD Projekt kept pretty quiet about their newest and upcoming RPG game...until E3 2019.

CD Projekt RED, the developer of the game did promise that 2019’s E3 would be the company's most important E3 ever and boy, they really weren’t kidding…

Here is everything we know so far about Cyberpunk 2077;

When will it be released?

It was announced at this year’s E3 that Cyberpunk 2077 will be released April 16, 2020.

Keanu Reeves blew fans away at this year’s E3 by making an appearance at the end of the new Cyberpunk 2077 trailer as a new character and then even came out onto the stage to deliver the official release date to everyone in person. It was just “breathtaking”.

You're breathtaking - Keanu Reeves

Whilst our hopes for a 2019 release have been squished, at least we finally know that we have less than a year to wait before playing. Missed the trailer from E3 2019? Watch it here…

Keanu's character...

Who is Johny Silverhand? Johnny Silverhand is a well-known character from the original 1988 Cyberpunk tabletop game in which Silverhand is a total Rockerboy. Keanu Reeves will be taking the role of Johnny and his new characters resembles him scaringly well. Johnny's original design is more 80s-inspired fashion whereas 2077’s design has much more of a rough and ready John Wick vibe.

Johnny Silverhand

Johnny Silverhand’s character takes a quite interesting direction in the new game as CDPR’s interpretation of Johnny is that he is actually already dead and is a ‘digital ghost’ that lives in V’s head. From this, it makes it seem that Keanu’s character could actually be more of a side character but after everything that's been shown for Johhny Silverhand, it seems that he is actually going to be one of the main characters in Cyberpunks story.

Character Creation

We've not seen much of the character creator yet but it has been said that it will give players more option when creating V, allowing players to create the V that represents themselves more than other games.

Character Creation

Some criticism came after an in-game advert was shown with a transgender model in that was trying to sell a drink with the slogan "Mix it up". It's the only depiction of trans characters people have seen so far, so it raised some red flags. But CD Projekt Red reassured fans and stated that they are "paying a lot of attention" to how it portrays transgender characters beyond customisation options for V’s character. "We do not want anyone to feel like we are neglecting this," said Tomaszkiewicz, "or treating it wrongly.".

Multi-player

In 2017, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński said that multiplayer features would ensure Cyberpunk's "long-term success," which caused some concerns given the recent fuss over microtransactions.

Multi-player

CD Projekt responded to peoples concerns with a tweet meant to reassure fans that they'll still be getting a singleplayer story. "Worry not, when thinking CP2077, think nothing less than TW3—huge single player, open world, story-driven RPG. No hidden catch, you get what you pay for—no bullshit, just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt. We leave greed to others.".

At E3 2018, we learned that Cyberpunk 2077 won't launch with multiplayer, but might get some form of it after release. We’ll just have to see…

So, that's all we know so far on Cyberpunk 2077! I’m sure as we move closer to its release CD Projekt Red will have plenty more exciting news for us all. We seriously cannot wait.
