Lex Luthor is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, and is the archenemy of Superman. The character was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and first appeared in Action Comics #23 (April 1940). One of the most intelligent people in the world, Lex Luthor is a power-mad American billionaire, gifted scientist and inventor, business magnate, and philanthropist to the city of Metropolis. He is a charismatic, well-known public figure in Metropolis, and his goals typically center on killing Superman, who Luthor views as an obstacle in his megalomaniacal goals and as a threat to the very existence of humanity.
